# How to Associate a Contact to a Contact

## Linking people to each other — for example, an adviser to their politician

Some of the most useful intelligence in Hive is who works for whom. Contact-to-contact associations capture that — most commonly, linking a politician to their staff.

**These links are always added manually.** Hive won't create them for you.

### Available association labels

- **Chief of Staff**
- **Adviser**
- **Executive Assistant**

### Linking two contacts

**Step 1.** Open the contact's record. On the right-hand side, find the **Contacts** section and click **+ Add**.

**Step 2.** Search for and select the contact you want to associate.

**Step 3.** Choose the correct association label, then save.

### Getting the direction right

Association labels describe a relationship, so check you're applying the label to the right person. The label describes **the contact you are adding**, not the record you started on.

If you're on a Minister's record and adding their Chief of Staff, the label goes on the staff member.
